Presented by Sun Microsystems & Sigma Solutions
8:10-8:55 am

Let's spend 45 minutes looking at the many different locks that an Identity key might need to open for an individual as they mature through their lives learning experiences .  This would include differing relationships with various  institutions and should encompass the development of an individual learning history and the creation of learning alternative based on this history throughout the individuals life.  we will explore the prospect of stepping outside of the nightmare we all experience of un-integrated identity systems which do not capture appropriate experience and demographics data into a world of easy system wide access rights and information mining to help guide the education experience.  The desire is for the audience to leave with an understanding of why the community has not until recently been compelled or capable of making a streamline educational lifetime experience possible in a reasonable time frame and an acceptable cost.

VOIP Service provider models for the enterprise customer

Hosted Centrex Services

Hosted PBX - One Connect ip

Hosted IP Telephony offers a range feature-rich of cost saving solutions to educational institutions and campus environments with reliable, full-featured Voice over IP (VoIP) in these feature packages:

These packages can be deployed individually or in combination on the same carrier-grade platform, with or without the integrated enhanced applications : desktop integration, mobility, productivity and business related, to meet customer communication requirements.

Hosted IP Telephony follows a model similar to traditional Centrex.   The service provider owns and manages all of the necessary network equipment and hosts it in their Point of Presence (POP).   The service is then delivered to the business over broadband access form the provider's POP.   Virtually any high speed broadband access technology will work. This provides a cost-effective solution for feature-rich service at very reasonable prices.

The only business premise equipment needed for hosted IP telephony is routers, Integrrated Access Devices (IADs) and either IP or analog phones.   Analog or IP phones can be utilized but IP phones enable more features and functionality.   IADs are necessary for analog phone and allow businesses to utilize their existing phones.

Hosted IP telephony offers some distinct value over IP PBX and traditional voice solutions. Some of the value propositions to educational institutions and campus environments are:

•  Financial Savings - institutions can save a substantial amount of both capital and operating costs by deploying hosted IP telephony.

•  Service Reliability - voice network equipment residing in the service provider pop provides a high level of service and disaster recovery.

•  Features, Functionality and Enhanced Applications -IP technology enables features and applications that are not available with traditional technology.

The last few years have seen voice technologies move from traditional TDM solutions to IP-based solutions.   IP-based solutions provide unique benefits to educational institutions and their end users.   From the business perspective, it alleviates the pains associated with installing, upgrading and maintaining hardware and software necessary with IP PBX or PBX solutions.   One provider, one number for service and support. Your institution will receive great, feature-rich service without incurring any of headaches of ownership.

Enterprise Voice Firewalls and Next Generation Voice Security and Management
Presented by Lantana Communications
Location: Sierra Ballroom I

Enterprise Voice Firewalls (EVFs) are a new class of technology that protects the voice service in similar fashion as data firewalls protect data networks. EVFs mitigate vulnerabilities associated with the legacy TDM voice network and well as the much larger and more complex vulnerabilities associated with Voice over IP technologies. EVFs also provide the only practical mechanism to obtain situational awareness and remote configuration control over the voice service and associated telecommunications and VoIP resources. Circuit-switched VPNs, a technology associated with EVFs the way data VPNs are to data firewalls, also can provide full privacy for sensitive /unclassified voice, fax and modem traffic over the PSTN.

The legacy TDM voice network remains a conduit for attacks against the data network through abuse of authorized and unathorized modems. Most enterprises maintain a large number of authorized modems for remote access to critical systems. These modems and the systems they protect often do not require strong authentication for access and are easily exploited by "war dialers". Unauthorized modems are also and issue. Attackers can bypass Internet-related defenses by scanning for unauthorized and poorly secured modems. Many users also access the Internet through their Internet Service Provider (ISP), so they can chat, check personal mail, download objectionable material, or play games. A typical enterprise, even with one modem usage policies and procedures, will have some number of unauthorized and/or poorly secured modems. These modems will exist for many years, even as the enterprise transitions to VoIP.

As the enterprise transitions to VoIP, additional vulnerabilities will be introduced. The VoIP network will be vulnerable to the same attacks used against other IP services. The VoIP network will be less secure than the circuit-switched voice network and due to their inter-connection, will make the circuit-switched less secure as well. Futhermore, VoIP will be less secure than other IP services due to issues such as reliance on real-time packet delivery, complex protocols, translation, and lack of encryption due to the quality of service impacts. Many vulnerabilities will be present, including voice easdropping, Denial of Service (DoS) on voice servers, DoS on calls, protocol exploits, toll fraud, tunneling/Quality of Service (QOS) abuse, implementation attacks, access attacks, and IP phone attacks. The level of threat will be moderate in an internal/campus only deployment and high in deployment that accepts VoIP from untrusted service provider's network.

EVF's are a next generation technology that solves the many security and management issues associated wit the voice service as delivered over the increasingly complex hybrid TDM and VoIP networks. EVFs are also increasingly recognized as a highly cost effective means to remotely manage large-scale hybrid voice network systems.

(1) Building the Self-Defending Network
Presented from 8:00 - 9:30 am
For today's companies, especially in this era of regulatory activity, preserving the integrity, confidentiality and longevity of corporate information is critical to success. As we move further into an information-driven global economy, the value of information and controlled access to that information has never been greater. The goal of IT infrastructure therefore is to create systmes that can detect and protect against unathorized access while providing timely acces to legitimate users. Simply denying access in the face of an attack is no longer acceptable. Today's networks must be able to respond to attacks in ways that maintain network availability and reliability. In many respects, the goall of security is to make networks more resilient by making them more flexible. Rather than succumb, networks must be able to absorb attacks and remain operational. This presentation outllines the rational for the Cisco Self-Defending Network, its foundation, and the incremental approaches Cisco has adopted to deliver these abilities.
(2) Cisco Security Monitoring Analysis and Response System (CISCO MARS)
