WebCT Vista Institutional Administration – Presented by WebCT and Brian Ormand (NMSU)-FREE!
Location: ICT, Rm. 141

This “hands-on” workshop is for WebCT administrators. The workshop provides an overview of the WebCT Vista system from the GUI administrator point of view. Hands-on exercises give the participants the opportunity to create and update their own administrative area on an evaluation server. Participants in this workshop can retain access for a period of time to play on the evaluation server after this workshop.
The workshop will cover setting up multiple colleges/programs within a single institution, interfacing with institutional systems (i.e. SIS & Portal), setting default branding and templates, and sharing educational content institutional-wide. Also covered is the sophisticated multiple role-based access to tools and information. This workshop will be lead by a professional WebCT trainer and will complement your existing skills, promote self-sufficiency, reduce the time necessary to go live with Vista, and enhance your e-learning deployment.

The Self-Defending Network – Presented by Integrity Networking Systems, Inc.-FREE!
Location: Senate Chambers

This session is an informal product overview and live demo of products and tools used in the “self defending network”. The foundation for the Self-Defending Network is integrated security that is native to all aspects of an organization. Every device in the network, from desktops through the LAN and across the WAN, play a part in securing the networked environment through a globally distributed defense. At ENMU-R, Cisco Security Agent provides threat protection for server and desktop computing systems. It aggregates multiple security functionalities combining intrusion prevention, distributed firewall, malicious mobile code protection, operating system integrity assurance, and audit log consolidation in a single agent package. By identifying and preventing malicious behavior before it can adversely affect the network, ENMU-R can eliminate potential known and unknown (“Day Zero”) security risks that threaten enterprise networks and applications. While periodic implementation of hotfixes, patches, and software updates are valid security measures, relying solely on these efforts leaves the network vulnerable to new attacks as the IT administrators remain one step behind the hackers. The continued evolution of our vision involves the incorporation of capabilities from other security vendors. In the Cisco Network Admission Control (NAC) program, for example, Cisco is working with antivirus vendors to help ensure that infected devices are not allowed entry into the network. These self-defending networks will identify threats, react appropriately to the severity level, isolate infected servers and desktops, and reconfigure the network resources in response to an attack.

The Cisco strategy of the Self-Defending Network brings together Secure Connectivity, Threat Defense, and Trust and Identity Management with the capability of infection containment and rogue device isolation in a single solution. ENMU-R has partnered with Integrity Network Systems to take a proactive approach with Cisco Security Agent to ensure the privacy, integrity, and reliability of information transmitted and to protect against internal and external threats. Please join us for an informal product overview by Cisco Systems, live demonstration by Integrity Network Systems, and a Q&A with ENMU-R IT administrators.

Internet Based Facility Management
– Presented by Schooldude.com -FREE!
Location: Dona Ana Room

Computerized Maintenance Management Systems have been around for years. These systems help administer the challenges of facility management or information systems management in educational institutions. However, 85% of school districts in the United States have been unable to take advantage of these solutions due to high cost and high complexity. This presentation will review what is available on the market, the “critical list” of features, and the trends in the industry. New Internet based services are being offered which dramatically reduce the startup effort and simplify the daily usage of these systems making them more practical for all school districts. You will see a live demonstration of these new technologies as well as review national surveys of school districts around the United States regarding preventive maintenance, facility usage, staffing, and utility management.

Learning Objectives:

• How to evaluate “Total Cost of Ownership” of Internet based approaches vs. traditional desktop software solutions.
• How the Internet provides small school districts (and big districts) with the same technology tools that the big districts have been enjoying for years.
• How the Internet inherently streamlines the multi-person process of work orders, school facility scheduling, inventory management, and utility tracking.

Topics:

• Computerized Maintenance Management Systems in Schools since the mid eighties.
• The players, technologies, and trends
• The small school districts missed out due to complexities and cost
• How the Internet is revolutionizing the software industry
• Streamlining educational business processes including a review of national research which focuses on:
• Scheduling and managing of non-curricular events
• Maintenance and IT work order requests, approvals, and assignments
• Preventive Maintenance scheduling
• Inventory requisitioning and management for custodial, instructional supplies, and maintenance
• Utility tracking and management
• Increasing efficiencies even further with wireless technology, and how this technology is applied to facility management

Hands-on the Future of Teaching
Recruiting highly qualified teachers is more easily mandated than accomplished in New Mexico. One third of the teaching vacancies each year are filled with teachers from outside the state, and across New Mexico it is not unusual for a district to have multiple teachers on waivers. Two years ago the Las Cruces Public Schools decided to intervene in the teacher shortage by launching a multi-pronged attack. First, the district set out to retain teachers by creating a two-year teacher induction program. Second, the district expanded the current career education program by initiating Future Educator of America (FEA) clubs in all secondary schools, offering PreTeaching I & II classes at all high schools, aligning this curriculum with the teacher preparation curriculum at New Mexico State University (NMSU), and beginning the process of creating a joint powers agreement with NMSU to provide concurrent credit courses for students in area high schools who are taking education courses while still in high school. The creation of the Teacher Pathways program allows the district to grow and nurture its own future classroom teachers. Students who complete this program, then enroll at NMSU and graduate with a degree in education, are guaranteed a contract with the Las Cruces Public Schools.

The speaker will provide a blueprint for creating a robust distributed network of streaming media servers with secure, pass-through authentication from WebCT. Topics will include authentication, content mirroring, and technical compliance with the TEACH Act.

Wireless Networking FAQ’s
The term 'wireless networking' refers to technology that enables two or more computers to communicate using standard network protocols, but without network cabling. Strictly speaking, any technology that does this could be called wireless networking. The current buzzwords however generally refer to wireless local area networks (WLAN). This technology, fueled by the emergence of cross-vendor industry standards such as HomeRF (now called SWAP), Bluetooth, Infrared and the most popular being IEEE 802.11, has produced a number of affordable wireless solutions that are growing in popularity where sophisticated applications need the freedom of wireless networking or where network wiring is impossible, such as in older school buildings, computer labs, warehousing and handheld computing equipment.

This presentation will deal with 15 FAQs relating to Wireless Networking and will attempt to clear some of the confusion related to the Wireless Networking and what its capabilities are.
